Do I need flood insurance for a waterfront home?

If any part of the home is in a FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area and you have a federally backed or conventional mortgage, your lender will require it. Standard homeowners policies exclude flood either way, so get flood and homeowners quotes before you write an offer, and ask the seller for the elevation certificate.

Can I buy a waterfront home from out of state?
